The Real Jerk Streatham Hill Opening May 2018
A new Caribbean restaurant called The Real Jerk will open in Streatham Hill this May. It replaces the Pukka Indian restaurant on the corner of Barcombe Avenue and Streatham High Road (opposite Balfe’s Bikes).
The owners of The Real Jerk also have two restaurants in Toronto with the same name. This will be their first branch outside of Canada. The menus for the Toronto restaurants contain Caribbean classics like Jerk Chicken, Curry Goat and Curried Fish. Vegetarian options may be limited!
Lily Pottinger the owner and chief at The Real Jerk has her own Caribbean cookbook. She describes the book as:
an easy to follow Caribbean cooking bible
It is available as a paperback or a Kindle ebook from Amazon UK.
You can contact the restaurant on 020 8671 1171. Comment below if you are excited to try the jerk chicken!
Really looking forward to it opening! Hopefully I can go a couple of times during my GCSE’s
The Real Jerk – Friday 1st June, so so disappointed. Waited over 2hours for our Meal. We eventually left feeling so let down you would not believe it!
Went to visit on 1st July 2018, so disappointed. Ordered 2 strawberry daiquiris – sorry out of syrup.
Ordered Jerk Fish (we are in a Jerk Restaurant) waited 20mins for them to come back and say – sorry no Jerk fish.
Our food took ages to arrive, it was dry, no sauce I had to ask for some gravy. The bill came and they had the Jerk Fish on the bill.
Nope I won’t be returning at all.
I agree with previous review. This place is a disgrace. Waited 45 minutes for any sign of food, even though there were only 3 other tables occupied. I ordered jerk chicken and it was like eating chalk! I asked for gravy of some sort 2 make it edible and it eventually came another 20 minutes later. I was asked “Do you still want it?” When I said no, because my food was now stone cold, the waitress asked “well shall I re-heat it then?” Unbelievable! I would advise anyone to stay well clear of this pace.
I hate to say Friday 13th July it was the night before our anniversary and waited over 2 hours for food!!! had to frantically leave to catch a restaurant before everything on the high street closed. Really disappointing as we always want to support local businesses but we left with empty stomachs and no real explanation as to way was happening. We were one of several customers in the same position. I hope whatever is terribly wrong can be fixed so they can improve. Never again!
I live on Streatham Hill. I’m hoping that this restaurant will have better customer services than others I’ve been to. Its so disappointing to be ignored as if you’re invisible . I will try it soon and let you know.
Same terrible experience 2.5 hour plus wait food continuously brought to wrong table service was terrible portion size questionable drinks took forever the upside was the authentic and tasty hopefully these bad points can be resolved 0 stars from me
So looking forward to eating here. The atmosphere was amazing in which we had been greeted by a member of staff as soon as we arrived. Nornally with Caribbean eateries you normally have to wait a while befire the staff finish having their own conversations. The menu was quite comprehensive giving you an amazing selection to choose from. The decor and music was quite representative of the Jamaican culture. The food I would differently recommend the curry chicken which was on point but the pepper steak lacked that spicy flavour that Im used to. And the waiter forgot to bring our coleslaw even through we reminded him twice. But the rum cocktails are the best thing about this place and would indeed stop of for a few drinks in the near future 😎
Visited The Real Jerk on Saturday 18th August, Really nice place, Staff where very helpful and friendly, I had the Curry Goat which was so tender and flavorsome, Meat melted in the mouth, my Daughter (who lives local and suggested we tried it), had the 1/4 Jerk Chicken which she really enjoyed to the point of not letting me taste any, Was very reasonably priced and all in all
very nice, would recommend definitely worth a try, id go back again to try more of the menu when visiting the area again
This place needs to improve if it’s to last the distance. Do the Pottinger’s manage it from overseas or is this a franchise? They need to check it out because the service is minimal, the “not so welcome” welcome turns people away, the bland food doesn’t reflect the spicy, flavoursome tastes of the Caribbean. And I’m told by a male member of our party that the men’s toilet needed a good clean! Come on people, we’ve waited long enough for Caribbean food on this High Street… don’t let us down!
I visited this place 3 times now and hoping to go there tomorrow around 5pm, I must say this is the best Caribbean restaurant I have eaten in before, food and everything is 9/10 you have to wait a while for your food because the place always full. So that’s a good sign for me, I love supporting my black people.
I enjoyed so did my friends.
I’ve heard about this restaurant from friends, so my daughter decide to take me to dinner today. I was excited to be going The Jerk Shack to have Sunday dinner.
First impressions counts, my daughter and I entered the restaurant and stood by the entry as you do, hoping to be greeted by a staff no about 3-4 minutes someone came our, standing there I couldn’t tell who was staff or customer. We eventually got seated then waited again for someone to take our order, we ordered our drinks and food, I was halfway through my food I ask where’s my drink I was told 5 minutes. Oxtail under seasoned and under cooked it should be falling of the bone, where was the gravy ??
I would never go there again. Management need to pay attention to their business, customer training is needed and so much more.
